Weekly Weather Synopsis 10/10/11

After a beautiful weekend in the East and some particularly nasty storms in the Midwest, what will the week bring?

Invest 93 is a subtropical storm located near the panhandle of Florida, which is rich in moisture and will touch off heavier squalls and thunderstorms.  The guidance shows this storm moving slowly into the Gulf of Mexico and eventually northward into the Mississippi valley, where some locations have seen heavy rainfall amounts already.  There is a slight chance that this system may intensify to a tropical storm, but confidence in this scenario is low at this time.

Compounding this is a nearly stationary front, which stretches from the great lakes to the GOM.  The system is pulling moisture from the Gulf, which will bring some much-needed rain to eastern Texas, but could touch off strong to severe storms in the plains and could result in flooding in areas that have already received heavy rainfall.

In the Pacific Northwest a strong front will be moving in, bringing with it some gusty winds and and potentially heavy rainfall.  Precipitation will eventually make it's way into Northern California

The Atlantic tropics remain calm despite the active season predicted.  There are several systems in the East Pacific, but guidance is predicting them to all stay south of the Baja Peninsula and not affect the CONUS.

By the end of the week, we will be seeing a strong ridge bringing hot temperatures in the Southwest with a trough in the East, bringing cooler temperatures and the chance for frost or freezes in the mountainous regions from Tennessee to New York.  Light rain will spread from Canada into the great lakes region and make it's way eastward.  Temperatures in the Northeast will remain cool through the weekend.
