Ranking of biggest traffic bottlenecks on key highways

09/27/2011 - 4:06:57 pm
A study by the Federal Highway Administration and the American Transportation Research Institute ranks where the biggest traffic bottlenecks for truckers are. The data unveiled on Wednesday, Sept. 21, was acquired by using GPS to track trucks and measure how fast trucks travel at any given place and point in time on key freight routes.

Chicago’s Circle Interchange is ranked No. 1 in the nation. That’s where three expressways merge near the downtown and where truck speeds average 22 miles an hour during rush hour.

Interstate 95 in Fort Lee, NJ, came in second. And three different interstates in Houston rounded out the top five.
