| Truckers Losing Revenue On Lengthy Bridge Repairs 12/02/2011 | |
City of Prince Albert officials had told residents that the bridge would be fully open by holiday season, and constructions crews are now rushing to meet the Christmas deadline. If repairs are completed on time, it still doesn't guarantee that weight restrictions would be lifted. Prince Albert Mayor, Jim Scarrow, said "The transportation industry is desperate, because what used to take 20 minutes to get across that bridge now takes three hours for heavy equipment to go around." The detour, said Francis Fremont of Dwayne Fremont Trucking, not only affects truckers, but also the customers. "They've got to pick up the tab ultimately. In the end we're eating a little bit, but it affects everybody." The weight restrictions are causing trucking companies to bleed revenue, and with the city not knowing how much weight the bridge will be able to handle until the job is done, the end to the hemorrhaging is a long way off. |
